Stolen cellphone ‘costs’ local RM5,000

KOTA KINABALU: A local man was fined RM5,000, in default, six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for keeping a stolen cellphone.

Magistrate Edward Paul imposed the fine on Mohd Nazreyin Amdin, 21, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail of 14 years or a fine upon conviction.

The accused admitted to possessing the stolen item at the road entrance to Kampung Kolam in Damai, Luyang on November 2.

Inspector Lim Swee Beng prosecuted.

In a separate case, a local man was charged with possessing a stolen motorcycle.

Rosley Duraman pleaded not guilty before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to keeping the vehicle belonging to a 25-year-old man at the roadside of Kampung Tambulion in Kota Belud about 9.30pm on September 2.

The court fixed November 26 to re-mention the case.

Inspector Azaman Hamat appeared for the prosecution.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old local man will stand trial on December 10 this year for allegedly trespassing on a building and stealing electrical cable.

Masrinhy Masazing, who appeared before magistrate Edward Paul, was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code for breaking into the building in Donggongon at 3.33pm on November 1 and stole the cable.

The offence provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and a fine, upon conviction.

The magistrate released Masrinhy on RM2,500 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.

Masringhy also faces another charge of consuming syabu.

No plea was recorded from Masrinhy who was allegedly caught committing the offence at the Penampang police station on November 2.

The indictment comes under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a fine or a jail term of up to two years, upon conviction.

The court set the same date for re-mention of the case and granted the accused RM1,200 bail with two local sureties.
