KUCHING: There is great room for bee farming in the state although the local market is hit with artificial honey.

This opinion came from Prof Dr Patricia Vit of University of the Andes, Venezuela, who was deeply impressed by the expertise and technology adopted by a bee farm run by Summer Pacific Bhd, a subsidiary of KTS Group of Companies.

She even described the bee farm as the largest, most efficient and most productive she has ever come across during a recent visit to the farm in Tatau near Bintulu.

“It is fantastic to see advanced bee farming technique utilised by the Chinese being brought to Sarawak. Such a move will, without a doubt, enhance productivity and the quality of honey produced.”

Vit, who serves at the Food Science Department, Faculty of Pharmacy and Bioanalysis of Andes University, lauded the purity of honey being produced at the farm while pointing out the state had the potential to emerge as a major honey producer in the region.

She said local honey producers could achieve more if there is more proper planning and closer collaboration with the government.

She believed the market for honey production would be huge, yet conceding there was dire need to tackle issues pertaining to artificial honey.

With 30 years of experience in honey research and analysis, Vit said every lineage of honey came with a unique identity like that of human fingerprint.

“Not only is the honey produced by Summer Pacific pure, it is also reassuring that the entire process of production is friendly to the environment and no genetic modification has been involved.”

She added honey was beneficial to human health as the sweet yellow liquid produced by bees would help enhance metabolism and healing.
