KUCHING: A teenager and her brother-in-law were injured along with a friend when they were set upon by a group of armed youths along the Kuching Waterfront yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 3.15pm when the 14-year-old girl from Semariang was hanging out with a group of acquaintances, including her 28-year-old brother-in-law and a 20-year-old male friend from Petra Jaya, while having drinks along the waterfront.

According to witnesses, a second larger group of youths suddenly arrived at the same spot and began attacking the first group using motorcycle helmets and sharp weapons, causing the victims to flee helter-skelter.

It was unclear if the two groups knew each other, or what the motive of attack was.

The attack left the teen girl with bruises on her head, while her brother-in-law and their friend sustained cuts and bruises to their face and head.

All three were sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

In an unrelated incident, a woman from Simunjan was referred to the Sarawak General Hospital here for burns suffered during a mishap while cooking yesterday.

The 54-year-old from Kampung Sungai Ba was said to have been cooking lunch over an open fire pit when she poured some petrol onto the dying flames to get it started again.

The fuel caused the fire to flare up and set fire to her shirt, before her screams led her husband to her aid and douse the flames.

She suffered burns to her body and was initially treated at Simunjan hospital prior to being referred here for further treatment.
