Disabled man killed in road crash

KUCHING: A disabled man was killed in a road accident along the Serian-Sri Aman Road when his motorcycle crashed into the side of a car on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified by police as Oliver Taput, 37, of Kampung Sumpang Tapeg in Serian.

The incident happened around 1pm near Kampung Antayan at Km85 of the Serian-Sri Aman Road when Oliver crashed his motorcycle into the front right side of a

Toyota LE car while the vehicle was making a turn into the village.

He was left with serious injuries to his head and ribs and succumbed at the scene of the accident.

The car driver, a 39-year-old man, was not hurt.

Serian District police chief DSP Mohd Jamali Umi, who confirmed the accident when contacted yesterday, said initial investigation revealed the deceased had been speeding and overtaking several vehicles prior to the crash.

He added the case has been classified under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987, and that the victim’s body was sent to the Serian District hospital for a post-mortem.

In an unrelated incident, a foreign labourer was left critically wounded after he was struck by a motorcycle while walking back to his rented house along Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road.

The 44-year-old victim, an Indonesian, was heading back to his house with his wife and four-year-old son when the accident took place around 6.30pm on Friday.

The family was said to have just finished crossing the road when a motorcycle ridden by 24-year-old man crashed into the victim, resulting in serious head injury which saw him being admitted into the Intensive Care Unit at Sarawak General Hospital.

The motorcyclist was also left with injuries to his head and body and was admitted into the Red Zone at the same hospital.

The labourer’s wife and young son sustained minor scrapes in the incident.
