PENAMPANG: A community leader yesterday expressed his concern about the impact the alleged assault and threatening case involving a ‘Datuk’ last week would have on the younger generation.
To deter the younger generation from thinking that they too can act like that, the relevant authorities must come down hard on the suspect if he is found guilty of the offence, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin Parents-Teachers Association president Hamdan Suarah said.
Hamdan said that what the Datuk allegedly did to the Kapitan Cina who is a senior citizen was very regrettable as it showed disrespect for an elderly person.
“We want the police to get to the bottom of the case and not leave any stones unturned in their investigations. We also want the person, if he is found to have committed the offence, to face deterrent action so that he does not do it again,” he said.
According to Hamdan, what happened to the Chinese community leader was scary and worrying and if the authorities do not take action, it could give youngsters the impression that they too will be able to get off easily if they commit the same offence.
Hamdan would also like the police to be more stringent in issuing firearm permit so that only those who really have the need to carry them will get it.
