Enforcement officers to regulate traffic at Sandakan market

SANDAKAN: Enforcement officers would be assigned indefinitely to ensure smooth traffic flow at the Tanah Merah market after the road leading to the area was converted into a one-way street.

“We will put our enforcement officers there, and will also request the police and Road Transport Department to assist in making sure that traffic flows smoothly,” Sandakan Municipal Council president Datuk James Wong said yesterday.

James advised motorists not to double park by the side of the main road next to the fish stalls as this would obstruct vehicles exiting the Tanah Merah market.

He further reminded that inconsiderate motorists found leaving their vehicles in such a manner would be booked for traffic obstruction by the enforcement officers.

James said this after Batu Sapi member of parliament Datuk Linda Tsen Thau Lin met him at his office at Wisma Perbandaran, to discuss the grouses aired by the public and hawkers over the conversion of the road to the market into a one way street.

Effective Nov 1, vehicles enter the vicinity via the junction near the Club 1 building and exit at the junction which was formerly the main entrance to the market.

Cars are no longer allowed to make a right turn into Jalan Cecily while motorists from Jalan Cecily cannot turn left into the junction to get to the market as they used to do prior to this.

Confusion arises since most motorists are caught off guard by the new ruling on a route they have been using everyday for decades.

Following a request from the Batu Sapi member of parliament, the Public Works Department put up or erected safety barriers to stop motorists from coming into the market area using the former entrance from Jalan Cecily which is now the exit.
