KEPALA BATAS: Special education students Muhammad Hamizan Mohd Hawari and Nur Afifa Abdul Halim have every reason to be jubilant not only because they scored excellence in their Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.

The two, from Sekolah Kebangsaan Hashim Awang and Sekolah Rendah Pendidikan Khas Alma, Bukit Mertajam respectively, have also been named as Penang’s ‘Best Students’ in the Special School category.

Muhammad Hamizan who is dyslexic scored A in all five subjects while Nur Afifa obtained 4A 1C.

“I read books to improve my memory and did my revision five to six hours everyday,” said Muhammad Hamizan who aimed to be a doctor.

His father Mohd Hawari Rafiaae, 40, when met while accompanying his eldest son to the school, said he did not expect him to score excellence in the UPSR as he had difficulty concentrating on his studies.

“He is hyperactive and was in the special education class until Year Five. Then his teacher advised me to have him transferred to the integrated class with mainstream education students.

“Initially he only obtained fair results but he showed an improvement in the UPSR trial by getting 5A,” said the Kulim, Kedah factory engineer.

Meanwhile, Nur Afifa who is visually impaired said she doubled her efforts in revising her lessons two months before the examination. — Bernama
