KOTA KINABALU: DAP Sabah chairman Jimmy Wong said the ESSCOM (Eastern Sabah Security Command) had failed as a result of the shocking murder and kidnap incident at Pulau Pom Pom off Semporna.

He called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid and also Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammudin to explain to the public, particularly Sabahans, why such tragedy happened again despite the establishment of ESSCOM early this year.

He said despite initial allocation of about RM2 billion to set up ESSCOM to improve the military facilities and capability, RM1.08 million to upgrade nine watch posts in the East Coast of Sabah, and RM75 million allocation from Federal Budget 2014 to improve the service of border protection, this tragic incident had once again proved that all this big allocation was ineffective to enhance border protection in the east coast of Sabah.

He added that public now lacked confidence in the authorities. “It has definitely affected our international image and government must follow up closely to ensure the safety of the hostage.”

“In view of Visit Malaysia Year 2014, as Semporna is among the best tourist spots in the country, the tourism industry is believed to be affected as a result. The government must find a solution to overcome the problem,” Jimmy said.

He suggested that the pump boat activities, believed to be the main transportation tool in the latest kidnap incident, be restricted and registered strictly.

He also recommended that the authorities add more police force to patrol the sea or land nearby the tourism spot, and set up a 24-hour observation spot to monitor the safety of tourists.

He said this incident was related and relevant to public interest, therefore he will be tabling an emergency motion to pledge the Parliament to debate over this important issue.

He hoped the speaker would allow this issue to be debated and the PM, Home Minister and Defence Minister should attend the Parliament session to explain to members of parliament on this issue.
