KUALA LUMPUR: A comprehensive study on economic and social impact is needed before banning vehicles aged more than 12 years from plying on roads, said Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said the study would also look into those who might be affected by the vehicle life span rule if it were to be implemented.

“We need to study cost of living and financial predicament faced by motorists before implementing such rule. Let’s not be hasty in making the decision,” he told reporters after launching a coffee table book entitled ‘Op Fajar: The Malaysian Success Story in the Gulf of Aden’ at Dewan Perkasa, Wisma Perwira here yesterday.

He was commenting on Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon’s statement that cars that were more than 12 years old were not safe to be on the road.

The coffee table book elucidates the Royal Malaysian Navy’s ability in protecting Malaysian merchant ships plying the Gulf of Aden from pirate attacks with the cooperation of the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation. — Bernama
