LAHAD DATU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday sentenced a Filipino to 30 months’ imprisonment and four strokes of the cane for causing injury to a police officer.

Annan Annamay, 45, was given a jail sentence and whipping after he pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge M. Rajalingam, who sat as a magistrate, to a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Mohamad Soffi told the court that the accused was arrested on June 29 this year at Kampung Puyut on suspicion of being involved in drug-abuse activities.

While being arrested by police officers from the Lahad Datu narcotics unit, the accused attacked a police officer using a pair of scissors and caused injury to the officer’s right hand.

The court ordered the accused to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest and for him to be referred to Immigration Department after serving his sentence for deportation to his country of origin.
