Mulling electronic fence to detect border smuggling, movement

KUCHING: The state is considering putting up an electronic fence along its boundaries to emulate Kelantan’s move.

Electronic fences enable one to detect if people are crossing the border. The non-physical fencing is a ground breaking technology used by the British army, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He explained that the one in Kelantan is used to monitor people crossing the border and prevent smuggling activities, especially of firearms from Thailand, and security issues.

“This is still at the suggestion level and a study is being made on the matter. The existing fences are physical,” he said after the presentation of funds to St Paul’s Extention Centre at Bandar Baru Samariang yesterday.

Meanwhile he urged tourism operators at Pom Pom Island, Semporna, Sabah to cooperate and not obstruct the police from carrying out their duties.

He said they should not compromise on the safety of tourists staying there.
