PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Well-being Index (MWI) registered an increase of 25.4 points for the period 2000-2012, an increase attributed to the various policies and development strategies implemented towards enhancing the well-being level of the people.

During the period, economic well-being improved by 33.3 points or 2.4 per cent per annum while social well-being improved by 21 points or 1.6 per cent per annum.

The Economic Planning Unit in a media statement yesterday said, the transport and housing component recorded the highest increase of 36.9 points each, while family component recorded the least improvement of 4.6 per cent.

The statement was made available to media at the launch of the Malaysian Well-being Report 2013 by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar here yesterday.

The MWI was constructed using 14 components; with economic well-being aspects covering communication, education, income and distribution, transport, and working life component, while the social well-being aspects covers culture, environment, family, governance, health, housing, leisure, public safety and social participation components.

Published for the first time, the Malaysian Well-Being Report 2013 touched on the status of well-being of the people based on MWI, an improvement to the Malaysian Quality of Life Index which has been published four times since 1999.

The MWI will serve as an important reference in formulating policies and programmes towards achieving an inclusive and sustainable high income nation.

Deputy director-general (Macro) of the Economic Planning Unit K Yogeesvaran during his presentation said the MWI growth was higher after the implementation of the National Transformation Agenda since 2009. — Bernama
