Filipino jailed, whipped for illegal entry

LAHAD DATU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a Filipino to five months’ imprisonment and to be given six strokes of cane for entering Sabah illegally.

Jafar Abdullah, 37, who pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Jalan Masjid Raya, Kunak on August 15, this year, was also ordered to serve his sentence from the date of arrest.

Judge M. Rajalingam convicted Jafar under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002), punishable under Section 6 (3) of the same Act.

Prosecuting officer, Inspector Mohamad Soffi, told the court that Jafar was arrested after he failed to show any valid identification when apprehended by police personnel.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence for deportation to his country of origin.
