LAHAD DATU: A delegation of European Union (EU) representatives to Malaysia will likely consider updating their travel advisories to around the world including Malaysia, particularly Sabah, based on information gathered from a briefing for them by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), here, yesterday.

Head of the delegation, Luc Vanderbon said the seven EU members at the briefing felt the information they gathered was useful in keeping travellers from the respective member countries abreast of the security measures taken by the Malaysian government.

“The member countries (of EU) will most likely take into
account seriously the information from Esscom when they are considering to update their travel advisories.

“In issuing the travel advisories, the information (from Esscom) should not only be taken seriously by the individual travellers, but also by the travel agencies that organise trips to any part of the world,” he told reporters after the briefing by Esscom director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek.

Vanderbon said the EU delegation felt it was appropriate for them to come to eastern Sabah to understand the role
of Esscom following the Lahad Datu intrusion earlier this year.

He said EU was interested in cooperating with its partners, including Asean in areas pertaining to security.

“One of the areas that we are looking into specifically, in
the context of Asean and particularly more with Malaysia, is maritime security,” he said. — Bernama
