Croc sighting gives ‘em the jitters

WORRISOME: A crocodile is seen sunbathing on the bank near the ferry point.

LIMBANG: The presence of a 3-metre crocodile sunbathing on the riverbank near the Kuala Lawas Ferry point of late has caused fear among the local people especially commuters who frequently use the ferry services.

Equally worried are fishermen whose livelihood depends entirely on the river and marine resources.

As such, they are urging the authorities to take preemptive measures to manage the risk of the people being endangered and also the crocodile as they are protected under the Wildlife Protection Ordinance in 1990.

A resident said the authority could, for example, put up warning signs about the presence of such creatures in their midst. He added that just recently there was a crocodile carcass floating near the ferry point.

“On one occasion, a man fishing from the ferry point was almost a victim of a crocodile. Luckily, he managed to escape unhurt,” the resident who wished anonymity said.
