Malaysian and Singaporean engineers hold dialogue

KUCHING: The 300th Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Professional Engineers Boards Singapore (PEBS) meeting was held in Santubong from Nov 28 to Dec 1.

Chaired by Public Works Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Noor Yaacob, who is BEM chairman, the theme of the event was ‘Engineering Transforming The Nation: Innovating A Sustainable Future’.

Public Works Department state director Zuraimi Sabki, who is a BEM board member, played host to both the board meeting and dialogue. Members of the two national professional bodies held a professional dialogue on Nov 30 with objectives including to foster closer relationships between the two regulating bodies in two neighbouring countries; exchanging ideas, programmes and sharing experiences on regulating issues and the latest information on professional engineering services development in both countries with a mission to ensure professional engineering services provided are of high quality and benchmarked to best practices.

The dialogue also discussed some areas of collaboration including Asean Activities, Euro Code, Accord / Non-Accord Countries and Building Information Model.

BEM is a statutory body constituted under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 primarily to facilitate the registration of engineers and regulate the professional conduct and practice of registered engineers in order to safeguard the safety and interests of the public.

PEBS is a statutory board in the Ministry of National Development and was established in 1971 under the Professional Engineers Act.

Apart from the formal activities, the delegates were treated to technical and leisure visits namely to the Sarawak River Barrage and also other scenic spots in and around Kuching.
