KUCHING: As part of preparations for defending its title in next year’s Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Track and Field Championship, Sarawak organised an athletics camp in Sarikei.

The four-day camp was held at Sarikei Sports Complex from Dec 4-8 was attended by 57 athletes and 20 coaches from all over the state.

Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) technical and development chairman, Ting Siew Nguong said yesterday that it was vital to prepare early for the championship as it was getting more and more competitive every year.

“Other states have improved especially Selangor, Perak, Johor and Pahang who are all keen to dethrone us,” he said on the coming challenges in next year’s event in Kedah.

He added “There could have been more participants for this camp but many of them are already away on holiday vacations.”

Ting was in Kuching to receive the Best Team award from the State Education Department (JPNS) as Sarawak athletics team won the MSSM Track and Field Championship for a record 17th time in Pahang this year with 18 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals.

The camp coordinator was Apo Latip and among those present at the camp were JPNS’ Head of Human Resource and Development Ellen @ Manium Enggang, Sports Unit head Paul Law and Sarawak State Sports School SMK Tabuan Jaya principal Hassan Wa’Gani.

“The camp was mainly to exchange ideas among the coaches and to discuss on the training programmes and preparation of the athletes at their respective areas,” added Ting.

Ting said the athletes have been identified and now undergoing training in their respective centres throughout the state and will converge for a centralised training a few weeks before the MSSM meet.
