KUALA TERENGGANU: Police have arrested four men and believe they have smashed a syndicate printing counterfeit money and trafficking drugs in the Besut area.

The men, aged between 19 and 45, were picked up under the “Ops Cantas” exercise by a team from the Terengganu police at about 8pm on Thursday, said Terengganu CID chief ACP K Manoharan.

He said the police, acting on information, tailed a 41-year-old man suspected to be involved in abduction cases to a chalet in Kampung Dalam Rhu, Cherang Ruku, Kelantan, where the man and the three others were caught.

“The raid on the chalet also yielded 810 pieces of fake RM100 notes, two daggers and an imitation pistol. All the RM100 notes bore the same serial number – AA0007792,” he told a news conference.

Various equipment used in printing the counterfeit money, such as printers, ink and laptop computers as well as three grams of ganja slab were also recovered, he said.

“Initial investigation showed that the gang produced the fake money to use in its drug trafficking deals,” he said.

Manoharan said the police received four reports in Besut and Setiu on transactions where the fake money had been used.

He advised ‘pasar malam’ (night market) traders to lodge police reports if they came across money suspected to be counterfeit.

Manoharan said the suspects had been remanded for seven days and the case had been handed over to the Kelantan police. — Bernama
