Local fined for three traffic offences

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday fined a local 48-year-old man for three offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.

In the first charge, deputy registrar Amir Hassan Amir Shah, who presided as a magistrate, fined Chang Hon Sang RM350, in default, seven days’ jail for driving a cargo lorry without a licence along Jalan UMS on May 22, 2012.

The offence under Section 26 (1) of the Act carries a maximum fine of RM1,000, or up to three months’ jail, or both, upon conviction.

Amir fined Chang, RM300, in default, seven days’ jail for driving the same lorry without a goods vehicle vocational licence at the same time and place.

The charge framed under Section 57 of the same act and punishable under Section 56 (6), carries a fine of up to RM2,000, or a maximum six months’ jail, or both, on conviction.

In the third charge, Chang was fined RM300, in default, seven days’ jail by the same court for driving the cargo lorry that was without an inspection certificate, at the same time and place.

The charge under Section 66A of the same act provides for a maximum penalty of RM5,000, or up to five years’ jail, or both, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, the same court fined Rahimah Ali, 20, for driving a motorcycle with an expired road tax on June 12 along Jalan Mat Salleh on August 3.

The offence is framed under Section 23 (1) of the act which carries a maximum RM2,000 fine.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Fung Chun Jen of the Road Transport Department, assisted by Mahasan Nordin, prosecuted both the cases.
