Tambun Indah attracts international school into flagship township Pearl City

KUCHING: Leading property developer in Penang, Tambun Indah Land Bhd (Tambun Indah) has secured an international school into its flagship township development at Pearl City, Penang.

The property developer in a press statement yesterday said its business park at Pearl City would open the door for an international school campus in the middle of 2015.

Tambun Indah said the company would design the international school campus with the assistance of GEMS Maju Sdn Bhd (GEMS Maju), the operator of GEMS international schools in Malaysia.

The company further added that the school campus would be constructed at a cost of approximately RM38 million and thereafter, it would be leased to GEMS Maju for 30 years.

Tambun Indah noted that GEMS Maju intended to invest a further RM32 million to equip the campus with necessary amenities and facilities.

The company observed that the school, once completed, would be part of a global network.

Meanwhile, Tambun Indah managing director Teh Kiak Seng said “Given Penang mainland’s ongoing robust economic activity driven by numerous foreign direct investments, we are optimistic that the international school is a timely development to meet the needs of the growing community of expatriate families living in mainland Penang.

“The establishment of an international campus within Pearl City, indeed the first international school in Mainland Penang will certainly raise the profile of the township as well as enhancing the vibrancy of our business park.

“We are heartened by the vote of confidence from GEMS Maju to place their first international school campus in Malaysia in our township, and trust that this will be a winning partnership for the long term,” Teh said.

Teh added that having an international school campus in Pearl City is be a major step forward for its Pearl City Business Park noting that the commercial cluster in the integrated township is also planned to contain a shopping mall and other retail outlets.

“We are seeing positive progress in the take-up of our business park, and have received many enquiries from various businesses. We are glad to collaborate with renowned partners the likes of Gems Education and the Maju Group to create a dynamic social epicentre for the community of Mainland Penang,” Teh observed.

On the other hand, GEMS chief executive officer Tom Collin said “We are delighted to have Tambun Indah as our partner to develop a state-of-the-art education facility in Pearl City.

“The new GEMS International School in Pearl City, Penang will bring world class education to the community and we are excited to move forward,” Collin said.

In the meantime, Tambun Indah said construction of the international school’s campus is targeted to start in early 2014 with completion estimated in the middle of 2015.

The company pointed out that GEMS International School in Pearl City, Penang will be built on an eight-acre of land in Pearl City Business Park, with a built-up area of approximately 200,000 square feet.

Tambun Indah said the campus would be able to accommodate a student population of about 1,400 people in the first phase with plans to increase its capacity to 3,000 students in subsequent phases.

It noted that the GEMS International School will offer the British curriculum programme, leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSEs) and A Levels.

The company said the school is expected to have its first student intake in September 2015.
