Thunderstorm warning in various coastal areas until evening

KUALA LUMPUR: The thunderstorms in the coastal areas of Sarawak, Labuan, and the West Coast of Sabah are expected to continue until late Friday evening.

In a statement, the Meteorological Department said thunderstorms can cause strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph and choppy seas with waves measuring up to 4.5 metres.

Thunderstorms with winds of 50 kmph and waves of up to 3.5 metres are also expected to continue until late this evening in the coastal areas of Selangor and Sandakan, Sabah.

The same is expected in Reef North, Pahlawan and Layang-Layang with wind speed of 60kmph and choppy waters up to 5.5 metres.

Meanwhile, strong winds and choppy seas in the coasts of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor Timur, Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak are expected until next Tuesday (Dec 31).

Strong northeasterly winds with speeds of 60 kmph are reported in the coasts of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, East Johor, Samui, Tioman, Bunguran, Condore, Palawan, Reef North and Layang-Layang, as well as waves exceeding 5.5 metres.

Coastal areas in these states are also exposed to a rise in water levels expected to continue until Dec 31.

These situations pose a danger to all beach and shipping activities including fishing, activities on oil platforms and ferry services. — BERNAMA
