KUCHING: One of Sarawak Energy’s research papers, which focused on rural electrification, were  recently highlighted in the prestigious 31st Conference of Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO) held in Jakarta, Indonesia, recently.

Entitled “Optimal Design & Planning of Hybrid Renewable Energy System for Rural Electrification”, the paper provides a comprehensive and practical roadmap for rural electrification. The paper was selected and sponsored by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) to be presented in the conference.

Author of the research paper and also a senior engineer in Sarawak Energy’s Research and Development Department, Goh Wei Chiun, said in a press release: “Nowadays, electrification of rural areas are becoming more imperative than before. Introducing hybrid renewable power systems will significantly minimise fuel delivery and mitigate transport problems, thus reducing maintenance and carbon emissions. It also represents an advantageous and more suitable solution for remote places that could be rich in renewable energy sources, like sun and water which could be harvested locally for electricity generation.

“The paper aims to exploit the optimal combination of different renewable energy resources and examines the operations strategies for systems where results would lead to the design and planning of optimal hybrid energy system,” added Goh.

Commenting on Goh’s presentation, Dr Chen Shiun, Sarawak Energy’s general manager for Research and Development said: “The successful selection of one of Sarawak Energy’s research papers highlights the company’s commitment to pursuing research that aims to benefit the livelihood of all Sarawakians, including the indigenous communities. We are pleased and honoured to be given such recognition from IEM and CAFEO. This motivates our team to do even better in order to achieve greater excellence in our research,” added Dr Chen.

This year’s CAFEO was themed “Asean Community Countries on Green Infrastructure Implementation”.

The conference was officiated at by the Indonesian Minister of Public Works, Bapak Ir Joko Kirmanto, at the Jakarta Convention Centre. Over 300 participants from 10 Asean countries and other Asia-Pacific countries like Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, and Australia attended the conference.
