KAPIT: The government will hold a roadshow soon to explain the rationale of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the people, particularly in rural areas.

Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Wilson Ugak Kumbong said this is necessary to counter the propaganda of the opposition on the matter.

“With regards to the implementation of GST on 1 April, 2015, it will not affect the livelihoods of the rural and lower income groups. Stop listening to all the propaganda being spread by the opposition. A detailed roadshow will be organised by the government to explain the rationale of GST to the public in the near future,” he said during an event at Rumah Lembang, Nanga Sedugau, Baleh recently.

He also explained the rationalisation of subsidies by the government for sugar, petrol and diesel. Ugak pointed out that the people in the rural areas and lower income groups would receive aid through the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) 3.0, which has been raised from RM500 to RM650.

He added that there is also insurance coverage under Takaful Nasional under the 1Malaysia People’s Group Takaful Insurance (i-BR1M) of up to RM30,000 for the families of BR1M 3.0 recipients who pass away.

“This shows that the present government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak cares for the people, especially those in the rural areas and lower income group,” he said.

Ugak was also in Long Busang, Long Urun, Asap resettlement area and Belaga town for various events.

He also visited the site and facilities for the proposed Bakun Regatta, which may be listed as a Visit Malaysia Year 2014 event.
