LAHAD DATU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday sentenced a foreigner to 18 months’ imprisonment for stealing Baju Kurung.
Umi Karsum Alani, 52, was jailed after she pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge M.Rajalingam, who sat as a magistrate, to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Mohamad Soffi Jalal while prosecuting told the court that the accused was arrested on December 16, 2013 after the shop owner lodged a police report saying that the accused had stolen 12 pieces of Baju Kurung from his shop worth RM838.
Investigation found that the accused pretented to choose clothes before taking a bundle of clothes from a rack and put it inside a black plastic.
However, her act was noticed by the shop’s cashier who then handed her to the shop owner.
The accused was ordered to serve her sentence from the date she was arrested and to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation to her country of origin.
