KOTA KINABALU: A teenage motorcyclist was killed in an accident while trying to elude a police patrol car here on Saturday night.

The unlicensed victim sustained serious injuries when he collided with a Perodua Kelisa near Tong Hing Supermarket.

Acting city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said the police had classified the case as a road accident.

The 17-year-old victim is identified as Mohd Firdaus bin Gumbar. The police confirmed that the victim did not possess a driving licence.

It was learnt that the city traffic police were carrying out mobile operations to nab traffic offenders from 11.30pm on Saturday.

The victim reportedly was riding his motorcycle alone at 1.30am when he noticed the traffic police. In an attempt to elude the police, he sped through the back lanes behind Great Eastern building to Standard Chartered Bank.

As he fled towards the back lane behind Tong Hing Supermarket, he collided with a Kelisa car coming from Nagasaki Restaurant. He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries at 2.40am yesterday.

The accident happened during Op Cantas Khas Trafik/Op Mabuk/Op Motorsikal that ended at 5am yesterday.

Chandra said the police detained seven motorcycles for violating road regulations.

Ten drivers underwent breathalyser test to determine if they were driving under the influence of alcohol, and three failed and were detained for further investigation.

Chandra warned that the police would continue to carry out similar operations to nab offenders.
