SHAH ALAM: Two Selangor-born soldiers who were killed by terrorists while defending the country in Lahad Datu, Sabah last year were awarded special posthumous awards by the state government in conjunction with the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebration yesterday.

They are the late Sergeant Sabaruddin Daud, from Sabak Bernam, and the late Corporal Mohd Azrul Tukiran, from Rantau Panjang, Klang.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, presented the awards to Sabarudddin’s widow, Nurul Nisa Abu Bakar, 42, and Mohd Azrul’s father, Tukiran Ahmad, 66, at the ceremony yesterday.

They each received RM10,000, certificate of commendation, a trophy and a set of clothing.

Met by reporters after the event, Nurul Nisa thanked the Selangor government for the award, despite her husband’s demise almost a year ago.

“I’ll show these gifts to my children and tell them that their father sacrificed for the country, that their father is a hero,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tukiran said the tragedy that befell his son was still fresh in his mind. He said Mohd Azrul’s sacrifice should be an example to school children for them to do good for the country.

At the event, the Selangor government also presented the Saidina Ali Award to Ahmad Ammar Ahmad Azam, a history student at the Universiti of Marmara, Turkey, who was killed in an accident at the age of 20 in November last year.

The award was given because of his excellent personality and academic achievement.

The former student of the Royal Military College obtained nine As in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination and was active in voluntary works, including in Cambodia, Indonesia and Syria.

The award, which included RM5,000 and a commendation certificate, was received by his mother, Nur Azlina Abd Aziz, 53.

At the event, the Selangor Sultan also launched the Selangor Dakwah Month and the Selangor Dakwah Strategic Plan for 2014-2018. — Bernama
