KIULU: Forty-five villagers and road users were cut off and stranded when a section of the road at Km 6.1 of Tamparuli-Kiulu Road near Kampung Rangalau Lama here collapsed on Tuesday.

The road became impassable to light and heavy vehicles when a section of the road of about 40 to 50 meters collapsed, cutting off access and stranding some 45 villagers around the area.

The road collapse was believed to have happened around 11.30pm on Tuesday due to continuous rains in the state capital for the last several days.

Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai when met at the scene said that he had informed the district officer and the Public Works Department of the matter.

“As of today, every effort has been made to repair the affected road so that normal movement of the villagers would not be further hindered. We have also informed the relevant authorities, including Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to monitor for any fallen electrical poles that may occur due to the road movement.

“I therefore urge the villagers and the public to be patient as the authorities are doing their best,” he said, adding that public could use an alternative road, Jalan Lawamandou/Telipok.

Meanwhile, the continuous rainfall has caused the Tamparuli bridge, near the Tamparuli township to become impassable with the overflowing river cutting off access to most vehicles.

Tuaran police chief DSP Abdul Fuad Abdul Malik said so far there had been no untoward incident or casualty reported. He, however, reminded the public to be extra careful during the rainy season to avoid any unwanted incident.
