State’s Sports Corporation to ensure optimum use of facilities

KUCHING: The Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) will ensure that sports facilities in the state will be put to optimum use.

SSC chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee said as the head of the sports corporation, one of his duties is to ensure that the stadium facilities are kept in good order so that athletes/sports people can make maximum use of them.

“SSC will be more focused to looking after the sports and stadium facilities while the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) will focus on preparation for Sukma,” Ong said when met after the Sukma XVII briefing/meeting at Regency Hotel yesterday.

“We are here to ensure that Sarawak sports is moving in the right direction and our first target is Sukma 2016 where we will play host,” he added.

“That (Sukma 2016) will be a big challenge for us as it is only less than two years from now. However, we still need to embrace the challenge.”

Ong, 54, who officially started work as SSC CEO on Jan 2 this year, said SSC will be also looking after the Centres of Excellence and Development while MSNS will look after the Elite Centres in the state.

“We shall also ensure that the right people, the right coordinators will come in to look after the respective sports. Former MSNS director Francis Nyurang Ding will be in charge of one of the divisions inside SSC,” he said.

Ong was a sports physiologist and former lecturer of Institute of Teacher Education Rajang Campus before he joined SSC.

He is also a panel member for Sports Science under the National Coaching Academy (National Sports Council of Malaysia) and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Coaching Education Panel (CEP)’s chairman.
