KUCHING: Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) has a very good combination of experienced and young members, said its president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Following our new constitution, Saberkas has 30 per cent of members who are aged 45 and above while the rest are below 45. When the time comes, the experienced members will give way to the young ones. This is part of our move to renew the organisation in order to bring more impact to the young people in the state.

“It is a good platform to train our young so that when the older members retire, the younger members can take over and bring the organisation forward.

“It is the government’s effort to train the young on which direction they should be heading with the state by 2030, so that they know what roles they play,” he said at the Saberkas Christmas and New Year Celebration Dinner at a leading hotel here on Friday.

Abang Johari pointed out that Saberkas is a very unique organisation in Malaysia.

“We are fortunate that within Saberkas we practise the 1Malaysia Spirit, where people of different cultural and religious backgrounds get together to bring about positive changes to the youths of Sarawak.

“With such cooperation and spirit among the experienced and young members, we will have stability in the state. We must work hard to defend such a culture within our organisation and society,” he said.

He was pleased to note that more youths were interested in Saberkas activities, especially with the upcoming setup of Saberkas in the local universities.

“Within these few months we will have our presence in UiTM and Unimas when they set up their student chapters. Experienced members will be going to these campuses to interact with the student members so that they will understand more about Saberkas,” he said.

Also present at the celebration dinner were Saberkas vice presidents Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Datuk Peter Nansian, secretary-general Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, deputy secretary-general Dennis Ngau, organising chairperson Tina Edward, organising secretary Abdullah Saidol and others.
