Chong Wei wins Malaysian super series badminton open for 10th time

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Lee Chong Wei was in a class of his own as he added the 10th medal to his personal collection as champion of the 2014 Malaysian Super Series Open Championship yesterday.

Chong Wei, the World No 1, won in style by beating World No 4 Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in straight sets, 21-19 and 21-9, in 47 minutes at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

As champion, Chong Wei took home US$37,500 (about RM123,637) while runner-up Tommy won US$19,000 (about RM62,443).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak presented the prizes. Also present was Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.  Chong Wei was Malaysian Open champion in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Malaysian pair Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah put up an impressive performance to emerge champions in the men’s doubles final of the 2014 Malaysia Open Badminton Super Series Championship, here, yesterday.

Their success was all the more sweeter as it was witnessed by local supporters who gave their enthusiastic and unwavering support to enable the duo humble the Chinese pair of Chai Biao-Hong Wei.

In the nerve-wracking match at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, V Shem-Khim Wah demolished their challengers in straight sets of 21-19 and 21-18 in 45 minutes.

As champions, V Shem-Khim Wah received US$39,500 (about RM130,231) while runners-up Chai Biao-Hong Wei took home US$19,000 (about RM62,643).

A clearly satisfied Khim Wah said the hard work with his partner V Shem had paid off and regarded the success as having fired their enthusiasm to seek more victories in several major championships this year.
