KOTA KINABALU: People in rural areas, especially from Tenom need to seize the opportunity to expand their business in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2014 this year.

Tenom Wanita Umno division chief Datuk Rahmahjan Sulaiman Khan said they need to harness the opportunity, especially with the expectation of more tourists coming to Malaysia.

“This year Malaysia is targeting RM76 billion in tourist receipts through the presence of 28 million tourist arrivals, and people in Tenom should be more creative and put effort to be part of this positive development.

“With the tourist arrivals target, home-stay operators or even those who are in the handicraft industry should be able to do something to increase their sales,” she said.

Rahmahjan said this after chairing Tenom Wanita Umno’s first meeting for this year at one of hotels in the city centre, yesterday.

She added that the movement will be assisting the government to spread the Visit Malaysia 2014 targets to rural areas, especially Tenom to ensure the people are ready to grab the opportunities.

“Tenom is one of the best destinations in Sabah, as the State Agriculture Park and Murut Cultural House are located in the district. We also have traditional food, and wonderful nature to be explored.

“I am sure with a little bit of assistance to the tourism operators in Tenom we will be able to contribute something to the Visit Malaysia programme this year,” she said adding that those who are involved in the tourism industry should improve their product quality.
