As mattress burns: Man dies due to smoke inhalation

Kuala Belait: The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at about 8.25am yesterday whereby an eighty-seven-year-old elderly has died of smoke inhalation after the mattress in his bedroom caught fire at Jalan Setia Pahlawan, Kuala Belait, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported.

The flames seared the walls and ceiling of the living room located on the ground floor of the two-storey house. The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) confirmed that the victim died at the scene. According to the police, they found the victim sitting on a chair by the bed. He was later pronounced dead upon arrival at the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.

The victim lived in the house together with his wife who only realized he had passed away when she tried to wake him up.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
