KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said Democratic Action Party (DAP) deputy secretary Junz Wong’s eagerness to be a hero had turned what was a private family matter into a public embarrassment.

Commenting on the recent fake claim about a young woman being a robbery and attack victim at Suria Sabah, which went viral, SAPP supreme councilor Chia Miu Lee, along with social activist Mary Siah, and SAPP Mudanita members Wenddy Gaimin and Rafidah Sarigan, criticised the young politician’s action over the incident.

“In today’s news reports, Junz had craftily tried to rewrite the events of the last two weeks to cover up his blunder. And when his attempt to take credit backfired, he irresponsibly blamed the girl for the blunder,” Chia said yesterday.

She said it was wrong for Junz to personally post the photos of the cut on the woman’s wrist to social media without the consent or knowledge of the alleged victim, and without verifying the incident.

“More so, Junz had taken the liberty to persuade the alleged victim to lodge a police report in an attempt to ‘confirm’ the alleged case, resulting in the serious offence of making a false police report,” she said.

Chia said: “First, it was Junz who personally posted the photos of a deep cut on the alleged victim’s wrist without the consent or knowledge of the alleged victim.

“He had described in detail, in his postings entitled, ‘KK Shocking News’ spread via Facebook and Whatsapp, that a girl was attacked by an illegal immigrant robber who was luckily scared off by a couple who just came out of the washroom.

“He had called on Suria Sabah to raise up their security level, and stated also in his posting that the girl refused to be named.

“After Suria Sabah conducted its investigation and issued a denial of the incident, Junz tried to cover up his own lie with another lie, this time by seeking out the girl, whom he knew refused to be named and lodged a report, and physically escorted her to make a police report, ‘after much persuasion’.

“Junz had made this scared young lady unwillingly commit an offence of lodging a false report which is a serious crime under the law. Junz and an assistant even posed for a nice photo with thumbs up announcing that ‘it really did happen at Suria Sabah basement’.

“If Junz had not recklessly posted the fake photos and story of the attack, then none of this matter would have gone public. If Junz had not made the girl go through the trauma of repeating her story at the police station, then a normal family would have been spared the anguish of a public embarrassment,” Chia said.
