KUCHING: Chemistry students can expect a bright outlook in job prospects as the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) offers various positions related to their certificate.

According to University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) deputy chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Professor Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, local students can look for jobs related to their line locally as SCORE offers various related industries.

“In fact, Tokuyama which operates in SCORE had approached us and asked if our graduates are interested to work with Tokuyama,” said Fadzil.

He was speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Faculty of Resource Science & Technology and the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) at Unimas yesterday.

Fadzil further elaborated that people should find a more creative and fun way to learn science subjects such as chemistry and physics.

“There are various efforts previously conducted together with MCI such as the Malaysia Chemistry Carnival and the World Water monitoring day. We do hope that such programmes can raise awareness and interest of students towards this science subject,” he stressed.

On another matter Fadzil pointed that the MoU should live up to its expectation.

“We normally see MoU where at the end, it only remains on paper. It is important that joint activities and programmes be held to ensure that it will achieve its target,” he explained.

Meanwhile, IKM president Datuk Dr Soon Ting Kueh in his speech explained that MCI had three main tasks, which is to regulate chemistry practice in the country, to represent in any national issues regarding chemistry and to promote the advancement of chemistry in the country.

“For 2016, we are planning to bring in an international conference of chemical convention here in Kuching, where we expect worldwide delegates of around 600 specialists in chemistry. We do hope that this programme can materialize with the help from agencies and the state government,” he added.

With the signing of the MoU, it provides more opportunities for collaboration between Unimas and IKM in promoting the advancement of chemistry and the chemical profession in Malaysia. Also present to witness the MoU signing were MCI honourary secretary Professor Datin Dr Zuriati Zakaria.
