Nicol edges closer to clinching maiden title this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian squash queen and world number one player, Datuk Nicol Ann David is just a step closer to clinching her maiden title this year after marching into the final of the 2014 Tournament of Champions (ToC) in New York.In the semi-final match held at the Grand Central Terminal early yesterday, the 30-year old Penangite did not have much trouble defeating fourth seed, Alison Waters of England.

She beat the Englishwoman in 11-8, 11-8 and 12-10 in 46 minutes.

Nicol, who had earlier beaten compatriot Low Wee Wern in the quarter-finals on Thursday, will take on Alison’s compatriot, Laura Massaro in the final.

Laura, the world number two and second seed cruised to the final after earning a hard fought 11-5, 3-11, 11-6 and 11-9 win against fifth seed, Camille Serme of France in the other semi-final encounter which lasted 62 minutes.

On the victory, Nicol who is also seven times world champion, said the match was keenly contested as both of them keep catching up to each other.

“I had to put pressure on with good depth. I really found the front corners of the court today as well.

“After two rounds of play on the glass court, I always see the ball better,” Nicol was quoted as saying in the tournament website’s www.toc.com. — Bernama
