SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Lanang triumph in Sibu Inter-Schools table tennis meet

SIBU: SMK Sacred Heart and SMK Lanang emerged champions in the boys and girls categories respectively in the Sibu Division Inter-secondary and Primary Schools Table Tennis Championship which ended at the Ping Pong Hall here recently.

In the boys section, SMK Catholic High were second, followed by SMK Tung Hua and SMK Methodist.

SMK Methodist were the runners-up in the girls section, followed by SMK Catholic High and SMK Tung Hua.

In the Boys singles, SMK Sacred Heart’s Jackson Yii cemented his reputation as the top player when he edged training and teammate Clement Chiew 3-2 in the final showdown.

Divisional player Jackson came back from a set down to win the second match at 11-7.

He lost the third set 5-11 but took the fourth match at 11-6 to set up an intriguing decider.

It was point for point until 5-5 before Jackson romped ahead to wrest the title.

The third placing went to Wong Khing Yieu of SMK Deshon, followed by Thomas Ling of SMK Tung Hua.

Rising star Crystal Tiong, 13, was champion in the girl’s singles, followed by Sia Hsiao Ching and her sister Hsiao Hung, both from SMK Lanang and Daphne Lau from SMK Methodist.

Like Jackson, Crystal also had to come back from a set down when she lost the first set 10-12 to Hsiao Ching, also 13.

Determined to make amends, Crystal showed her prowess and played to her true self before chalking up the remaining three sets 11-3, 11-4 and 14-12 to lift the title.

In the primary schools category, SJK Sacred Heart Chinese won the boys title, followed by SJK Tung Hua and SJK Chung Hua.

SJK Methodist emerged victorious in the girls section with SJK Kian Hin taking the second position followed by SJK Tung Hua.

Kelvin Ngu from SJK Sacred Heart was the boys singles champion, followed by Filmer Yap (SJK Chung Hua), Pio Su Kwong (SJK Sacred Heart Chinese), Maxwell Lau and Alden Wong.

Karen Lyne Dick from SMK Methodist was champion in the girl’s singles competition, followed by Fion Soh, Lydia Lau, Faustina Su and Esther Tiong.

Sibu Ping Pong Association Dr Clement Chen gave away the prizes in the presence of Sibu Divisional Education Officer’s representative Lim Chun Len and principal of SMK Tung Hua Ling Chai Ping.

Meanwhile, all the top 18 players had been picked to undergo training for the coming Inter-Division Schools Table Tennis Championship to be held in Sarikei from Feb 28 to Mar 2.
