MIRI: A chartered bus driver was killed when the bus he was driving skidded and crashed into the dense undergrowth by the opposite lane at Riam Road here yesterday.

The incident was reported to have occurred around 10am as the bus driver was heading to the company’s workshop in Riam, which is not far from the scene of accident.

The bus driver identified as Saga Tunjang,46, died from serious injuries he sustained on his chest due to the impact.

No passengers were reported to be on board the bus during the incident.

Saga was coming back from Bintulu as he had dropped off his passengers who had chartered the bus from Bintulu for the episcopal ordination of Bishop Richard Ng held at Miri Indoor Stadium on the same morning.

According to Saga’s son, his father had gone to Bintulu on Friday and he was expecting his father to come home safety yesterday.

The workshop’s security guard was the first to spot the accident and immediately alerted other colleagues who later dashed to the scene to help.

“Saga was still breathing when we arrived at the scene, he shouted ‘Sakit…’Sakit’…several times,” said one of Saga’s colleague, who only wished to be known as Faisal, 23. They immediately sent Saga to Miri Hospital but unfortunately, he died a few hours later, around 1pm.

Miri deputy police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit when contacted yesterday confirmed to have received a report on the incident.
