KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has been urged to set up more dialysis centres especially in the rural areas to help poor kidney patients.

National Welfare Foundation (YKN) chairman, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the existing centres could not accommodate the high number of kidney patients.

“I am aware it is not easy to set up a centre, there are several tough conditions. But we can ask government-linked companies and other foundations to help if the ministry sets up more centres,” she said.

She said this to reporters during a ceremony to give out contributions to  50 kidney patients at the Kuala Lumpur Lions Renal Centre here, yesterday.

Shahrizat said every government-linked company must assist existing dialysis centres voluntarily as a corporate social responsibility and to ease the burden of kidney patients.

YKN had spent RM214,500 to finance the treatment for 20 kidney patients of the overall 50 at the Kuala Lumpur Lions Renal Centre since 2008, Shahrizat added. — Bernama
