SINGAPORE: The father and stepmother of a Malaysian woman under detention by the Singapore authorities for allegedly crashing her car through a security barrier at Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday, visited her at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) yesterday.

They spent almost two hours with the 28-year-old who works as a teacher in Kuala Lumpur.  She is reported to have a history of mental illness.

Appearing calm, but a little solemn, the couple did not wish to talk to the media when met after the visit which occurred about 2.30pm.  Accompanying them were officials from the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore.

One of the officials said: “The high commission is satisfied and thankful to the Singapore authorities who have been very helpful and cooperative for the smooth process of the visit.”

Earlier, Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob said the parents were given permission by the Singapore authorities to meet the suspect.

They were notified by the high commission that the suspect was in  Singapore authorities’ custody.

On Jan 17, the suspect, from  Kedah, was alleged to have crashed through the security barrier at the Singapore Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex in Woodlands.

Over the next three days, she had disappeared without a trace in the republic, despite a nationwide police alert until the authorities caught up with her at the ministry’s compound. — Bernama
