KANGAR: Two men, believed to be Thais, took flight when a police General Operations Force (PGA) team spotted them attempting to hunt illegally in the Malaysian jungle in the vicinity of the Perlis-Thai border early this week.

The team, from the Third Batalion in Bidor, Perak seized a Czech-made sniper rifle, magazine, two bullets and two green backpacks containing camouflage fatigue hammocks.

State police chief Datuk Zull Aznam Haron said the seizures were handed over to the Padang Besar police headquarters to facilitate investigation.

“The men, believed to be Thai nationals, had intruded into the area to hunt illegally in the Malaysian jungle,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Zull Azman said in the incident at 9am, the team had stumbled upon the two black-clad men at the Simpang Lima Guard Post in Kaki Bukit before they escaped into the jungle.

Meanwhile, the Padang Besar Anti-Smuggling Unit seized a contraband consignment of 1,200 cans of alcoholic drinks of various brands from a car at Kampung Kolam in Padang Besar last Thursday. — Bernama
