SIBU: Police here have detained a husband and wife in their 40s suspected to have cheated three individuals of RM20,000.
The couple was said to have posed as welfare officers in tricking the elderly single mothers to part with their money.
The couple allegedly promised the victims that they could help them to get welfare assistance.
The victims were told to withdraw all the money in their savings as proof of eligibility for the aid.
The victims were also said to have been told by the couple to place their money with them.
Acting on a report lodged by the trio, the police arrested the couple at a house at Kemuyang Road here on Monday night.
The couple is under a four-day remand which began on Tuesday.
