KAJANG: At least four Latin American men were believed to have broken into a jewellery shop before carting off goods worth RM10 million at the One Utama shopping complex during the Chinese New Year holidays.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said this was based on statements from witnesses who saw the four men leaving the premises with a bag on the day of the incident.

“We believe the incident occurred within 18 hours between Sunday night and Monday night…during that time there was a blackout and the robbery may have happened during the blackout orchestrated by the suspects.

“So far we contacted airport authorities to monitor Latin Americans coming in and out of the country,” he told a news conference here yesterday.

He said according to the premises owner, the shop incurred RM10 million in losses and it would be re-evaluated during investigations.

Abdul Rahim said the suspects also made off with the closed circuit television (CCTV) recorder and equipment to break open the safe box, not dismissing possibilities that an insider may have been an accomplice.

“The premises is equipped with a CCTV and motion sensor, but the system was disabled and taken away…only those with the expertise can do so.

“We’ve also got fingerprints and will look over it including CCTV recordings … I think we can solve this case soon with help from the One Utama management and public,” he said.

In the incident, several safe boxes containing jewellery at a shop in One Utama were broken using Oxytelene, which was discovered by shop workers when they resumed business today. — Bernama
