KAPIT: Pelagus folk have been called on to ensure the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate wins the seat in the next state election.

Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut said this is necessary so that Pelagus can once again receive minor rural project (MRP) grants.

He pointed out that constituents in the Baleh state constituency, which he represents, receives funds from both himself and Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

“We’re both from the BN. All BN elected representatives are allocated RM1.5 million for MRP each year. For Baleh folk, we benefit from the MRP plus the Member of Parliament’s fund,” Masing said when presenting MRP grants yesterday.

He pointed out that because Pelagus is represented by Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) deputy president George Lagong, who won the seat in the 2011 as an independent, the area does not receive MRP grants.

“The people suffer because he doesn’t serve the constituency. Never mind, this time around, you lose out. You’ve learnt the lesson. I hope in the coming state election you will vote wisely for the BN candidate so that you’ll receive MRP grants like your counterparts in Baleh,” said Masing.

On the event, he explained that grants totalling RM167,000 from last year’s allocation were for 16 recipients from schools, longhouses and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Baleh.

Masing also presented RM100,000 to 10 village security and development committees (JKKKs) from Pelagus.

Meanwhile, Ugak also handed out MRP grants to seven JKKKs from his constituency during the same event.
