MIRI: The internal dispute in Miri Taxi Association, which has been going on for too long, should be resolved within the association, said association member Chai Chee Khiong yesterday.

Thus, he called on the association’s committee members not to invite outsiders, particularly politicians, to help resolve the prolonged disagreement over the association’s constitution.

Leading a group of 15 taxi drivers and operators to meet the press yesterday, he claimed that the dispute was over members’ fee which was not tabled during the association’s biennial meeting for adoption and for members’ approval.

“This issue has been going on for the past six years and until today, the issue is yet to be resolved. We only came to know that there was amendment to the association’s constitution pertaining to membership fees,” said Chai.

“We are dead against amendment to the constitution particularly on the increase in entrance or joining fee to RM400 for taxi drivers and RM200 for co-drivers or assistant drivers, which originally was only RM10. The increase will only burden the members,” he added.

He reiterated that the amendment be tabled and agreed to by all members before implementation.

The group also questioned the appointment of some exco-members, who they claimed were not properly elected.

As such, Chai urged the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to act accordingly.

He also disclosed that they had written complaint letters on the alleged irregularities to ROS over the past six years, but to their dismay no action had been taken by ROS.

They will table some matters for discussion and endorsement during the next biennial meeting, he added.
