MIRI: Miri Division Rugby Union (MDRU) is organising the IRB (International Rugby Board) Match Official Level 1 course this weekend at the Youth Centre from 8 am to 4pm, and on Sunday a free course on “Get Into Rugby” (GIR) at the same venue from 4pm to 6pm .

Disclosing this yesterday, MDRU development officer, Sylvia Alexander Lian added that a Test Match between Bintulu Rugby Club and Brunei KB Pythons (Kuala Belait), at SM Sains Miri would also be held tomorrow at 3pm.

SyIvia said IRB Educators from Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) will be conducting the course.

“Some 20 people including those from Brunei will be attending the IRB Match Official Level Course, it is one of our activities to produce more rugby match officials or referees in Sarawak,” she told the Borneo Post yesterday.

Currently, she said there is a shortage of coaches here as only she herself is a full time coach, the other three were newly trained coaches.

“The “Get Into Rugby” programme is to create greater awareness among coaches, teachers and parents on how to get kids involved in rugby. It is also to change the perception of public and kids and to get more young kids to be active in sports and discipline,” said Sylvia who is also a state rugby player and coach for MDRU.
