Miri to host MRU inaugural women’s tournament

MIRI: The Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) inaugural Women’s Tournament will be held here on Feb 15.

A spokesperson for MRU, Raimi Yusuf said the tournament is organised following their resounding success since the introduction of women rugby five years ago.

“The introduction of women rugby for last 5 years was a resounding success and we’ve had very positive feedback from the rugby community.

“As such, we are proud to announce that MRU will now host this tournament yearly,” said Raimi.

Meanwhile, Miri Division Rugby Union (MDRU) coach, Sylvia Alexander Lian said Miri will be among the six teams competing in the MRU Women’s Rugby 7s tournament to be held at the field of Curtin University, Sarawak in Senadin.

“MDRU Ladies Section is sending a team to represent Sarawak comprising eight from here and four from Kuching, mostly young potential players under 18.

Another team from Sarawak is from the UPMKB Dolphin Rugby Club while the other teams are from Sabah and Kuala Lumpur,” she said to the Borneo Post yesterday.

Sylvia who is MDRU’s development officer said the following day at the same venue, there will be open selection for the national team for the Asean Games 2014 in South Korea and the Sea Games 2015 in Singapore.

“We encourage the people particularly Mirians to take this opportunity to join the
tournament and selection of the national team,” adding that registration is free for the tournament.

The tournament is from 9 am to 4 pm on Feb 15 while the selection for the national team on the following day is from 8 to 10.30am. Admission is also free.
