Illegal gambling can pose a social threat if not stopped not stopped

SARIKEI: Social problems linked with illegal cyber gambling activities have been a cause of great concern in the district especially in the town area.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarikei branch chairman Dr Wong Hua Seh said he had received many complaints related to cyber gambling and if the authorities concerned do not put a stop to it, will be a serious threat to society.

The Repok assemblyman claimed that many individuals involved in the illegal gambling activities had lost heavily with some opting to borrow from the operators of such centres (cyber gambling outlets) and putting themselves in heavy debts.

Unable to settle their debts, and fearing for their safety, most of these gamblers were forced to run away from town and hide elsewhere, Wong revealed during a press conference at the party’s office here yesterday.

“Unfortunately, the problem does not end there. According to most of the complaints I received, it is only the beginning of the real problem,” Wong said.

“When these heavily indebted breadwinners were forced to hide elsewhere, family members were subject to
threat and harassment by operators of such illegal gambling activities,” he added.

He was equally concerned about the possibility of friction between rivalry groups involved in the operation of such activities which could result in confrontations and gang fights.

Wong therefore called on the relevant authorities to view the matter seriously and take immediate steps to stop it as it could undermine the safety and livelihood of the local community.

“The police, in particular, ought to find out the root cause of the problem and take the appropriate remedial steps so the public can be assured of their security and safety,” Wong urged.

Also present during the press conference was Member of Parliament for Sarikei, Andrew Wong Ling Biu.
