KUCHING: A police impersonator was arrested yesterday after he forced his way into a workers’ hostel on Monday night and molested a young woman.

The 22-year-old from Kampung Sampun in Samarahan, was detained by police after members of the public heard the woman’s screams and apprehended him around 11.30pm.

According to sources, the incident happened at a commercial shoplot at Mile 4 Penrissen Road after the suspect knocked on the hostel door and was greeted by the 20-year-old woman.

Claiming to be a ‘Singapore policeman’, he forced his way inside before forcibly kissing and groping the woman.

Members of the public who came to the woman’s aid prevented him from escaping and handed him over to the police for further action.

In a separate case, a man and a woman were detained after a routine crime prevention check found them to be in possession of dangerous weapons.

The 29-year-old man from Kampung Tabuan Melayu and his 19-year-old companion from Taman Sri Wangi were nabbed around 11.30pm on Monday in front of a bank at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim.

A patrolling police team was said to have spotted their motorcycle parked next to the bank and decided to check after noticing the machine was missing its front licence plate.

When the couple emerged after depositing cash at the bank, police personnel proceeded to question them and inspected a badminton racket bag in the motorcycle basket which was found to contain a meat cleaver and a sword.

Both suspects were subsequently detained in the lockup as police seek to probe their possible involvement in other crimes.
