RM3.5 mln allocated to 20 NGOs to educate consumers

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has allocated RM3.5 million to 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to carry out a consumerism campaign under its education empowerment plan from 2014 to 2019.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said the NGOs chosen would hold road shows and use new media to enlighten consumers on their rights.

He said the NGOs were given two modules, namely to assist consumers deal with rising cost of living, and inculcating consumer culture and lifestyle.

The NGOs, which are playing their role based on their jurisdiction, will undertake over 300 consumer empowerment programmes from February to April, he told reporters after handing over the allocation to the NGOs here yesterday.

He said the campaign would be carried out in urban as well as rural areas, institutions of higher learning, schools and public places.

The NGOs include the Association of Wives and Women Members of Malaysian Public Service (Puspanitapuri), Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) and Peninsula Malay Students Confederation (GPMS). — Bernama
