KUCHING: Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) has made it clear that they will soon apply to join the state Pakatan Rakyat opposition fold.
Its president Larry Sng through a press release on Sunday said the party is consistent in its approach to work alongside Pakatan.
He said: “Our party (SWP) is consistent in our approach to work alongside PR, and we will soon apply to join them through the state Pakatan Rakyat Council now that it is formed.”
And as for the coming state by-election in Balingian, if it is called, SWP is unlikely to contest the seat, said Larry, who was once an assistant state minister and former Pelagus assemblyman.
He, however, said the matter would be deliberated on at SWP’s next supreme council meeting.
State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen on Saturday said SWP was still not a member of Pakatan, adding the opposition coalition had not received any formal application from SWP.
The Bandar Kuching MP and Kota assemblyman said he however acknowledged the fact that SWP had made an indication to join them.
Asked whether Pakatan prefers SWP to officially join the opposition coalition or go on its own, Chong said the question would be best answered by SWP.
Prior to the last parliamentary election, SWP declared that it was Barisan Nasional (BN)-friendly but they were adamant in contesting in all Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s seats allocated by the BN.
SWP failed miserably to unseat BN-PRS from these seats; namely Julau, Selangau, Lubok Antu, Kanowit, Hulu Rajang and Sri Aman.
